Babylon; Confusion
Greetings, Wayne, a servant of God, by the grace of God, teaching truth under the authority of Jesus Christ to any who are willing to receive it, or as Jesus put it, to any who have ears to hear (Mat 13:43).
The Holy Bible contains the truth of God by the word of God (Joh 17:17); therefore, God teaches and gives understanding, wisdom, and knowledge to all who pray and seek Him with all the heart (Jer 29:12,13).
The purpose of this teaching is to help the reader recognize from where all the religious confusion originates. True worship of God has been, and is being, carried out in spirit and in truth (Joh 4:23,24).
I will be the words in green. Purple Highlights will be key words or phrases of truth.
We will begin with the eight people entering Noah's Ark:
Gen 7:13 In the selfsame day entered Noah, and Shem, and Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and Noah's wife, and the three wives of his sons with them, into the ark;
Skipping ahead to post-flood:
Gen 8:14 And in the second month, on the seven and twentieth day of the month, was the earth dried.
And so, after the flood, mankind has a new start on the earth with the knowledge of God held by eight people. Why did not the knowledge of God continue to flourish throughout all of the new world. Well, as we will come to see, it was because of a false worship system called idolatry.
This system of idolatry was designed to oppose the worshipping of the one true God in spirit and in truth (Joh 4:23), and to deceive the nations into worshipping Lucifer, now called Satan, and his devils through idols:
Isa 14:12; Rev 12:9; Luk 11:18; Psa 97:7; Isa 2:8,20; Rev 9:20.
Let us continue with God's instructions to Noah:
Gen 8:15 And God spoke unto Noah, saying,
Gen 8:16 Go forth [Come out] of the ark, you, and your wife, and your sons, and your sons' wives with you.
Gen 8:17 Bring forth with you every living thing that is with you, of all flesh, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth; that they may breed abundantly in the earth, and be fruitful, and multiply upon the earth.
And so they have. But notice the covenant that God made with mankind through Noah and his seed as a result of Noah having put God first through offerings:
Gen 8:20 And Noah built an altar unto the LORD; and took of every clean beast, and of every clean fowl, and offered burnt offerings on the altar.
Gen 8:21 And the LORD smelled a sweet savour; and the LORD said in His heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man's sake; for the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done.
If parents are conquered by the false worship system of Babylon (confusion brought about by idolatry), who will teach the children truth? Here is truth:
Gen 8:22 While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.
Have these things not been so, even after many years of potential annihilation by nuclear weapons? Yes, we live in perilous times (2Ti 3:1), yet, there will be no complete nuclear annihilation of mankind. Here, speaking of the end of the age, from the Lord Jesus Christ:
Mat 24:21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be [Jer 30:7].
Mat 24:22 And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened.
The elect are the people of God who worship Him in spirit and in truth. Read the entire chapter, and you will see in verse 1 that Jesus was speaking to His disciples, or followers. Continuing with Noah:
Gen 9:1 And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth.
Gen 9:2 And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every fowl of the air, upon all that moves upon the earth, and upon all the fishes of the sea; into your hand are they delivered.
We see the same dominion granted to mankind at his creation during the renewal of the earth in Genesis 1 (Gen 1:26; Psa 104:30).
For more on the renewal of the earth, see the teaching Genesis - In the Beginning.
And confirming the covenant with mankind, as well as with all the living creatures, through Noah and his seed:
Gen 9:8 And God spoke unto Noah, and to his sons with him, saying,
Gen 9:9 And I, behold, I establish my covenant with you, and with your seed after you;
Clearly, that would be the whole world of mankind.
Gen 9:10 And with every living creature that is with you, of the fowl, of the cattle, and of every beast of the earth with you; from all that go out of the ark, to every beast of the earth.
Gen 9:11 And I will establish my covenant with you; neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth.
Consider these verses regarding God leaving a small remnant:
Ezr 9:8 And now for a little space grace [Gen 6:8] has been shown from the LORD our God, to leave us a remnant to escape, and to give us a nail in His holy place, that our God may lighten our eyes, and give us a little reviving in our bondage [Rom 8:21; Gal 5:1].
Isa 1:9 Except the LORD of hosts had left unto us a very small remnant, we should have been as Sodom, and we should have been like unto Gomorrah.
Isa 10:20 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the remnant of Israel [tribes of Jacob (Isa 49:6; Gen 32:28)], and such as are escaped of the house of Jacob, shall no more again stay upon him that smote them [read the entire chapter]; but shall stay upon the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.
Only a very few stay upon the whole truth of God in a world filled with Babylon, the confusion of many religions including Christianity:
Luk 21:8 And he said, Take heed that you be not deceived: for many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and the time draws near: go you not therefore after them.
Remember this:
Joh 4:23 But the hour comes, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeks such to worship Him.
Now is the time when a few, or remnant, have been called by God the Father to worship Him in spirit and in truth:
Rom 11:5 Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.
God has kept a remnant bearing His truth since the time of Jesus Christ right up until our present perilous times (2Ti 3:1). Let us continue with God's covenant with mankind concerning the flood:
Gen 9:12 And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations:
Gen 9:13 I do set my bow [rainbow] in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth.
Here, confirming God's rainbow:
Rev 4:3 And He that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald.
And confirming the token, or sign, as something that can be seen:
Gen 9:14 And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud:
And again:
Gen 9:17 And God said unto Noah, This is the token [sign] of the covenant, which I have established between me and all flesh that is upon the earth.
We will now focus our attention on Noah's descendants. Fear not a lengthy genealogy. For the purpose of the teaching, we will put our sights on Noah's son Ham after an upcoming side study.
Gen 9:18 And the sons of Noah, that went forth of the ark, were Shem, and Ham, and Japheth: and Ham is the father of Canaan.
Make a note of Ham as the father of Canaan.
Gen 9:19 These are the three sons of Noah: and of them was the whole earth overspread [dispersed; scattered].
The repopulation of the entire earth by only three men has no doubt sparked speculation, debate, and a host of interpretations based on the variety of races. I will, as is my custom, provide my view using the Holy Bible:
Deu 29:29 The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.
Give unto God faith and obedience, and leave the secrets with Him:
Luk 18:27 And He said, The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.
Now, we begin to see nations form from the descendants of Noah:
Gen 10:1 Now these are the generations of the sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth: and unto them were sons born after the flood.
The result:
Gen 10:5 By these were the isles of the Gentiles divided in their lands; every one after his tongue, after their families, in their nations.
Before we continue, let us have a side study on who was responsible for uncovering Noah's nakedness:
Gen 9:20 And Noah began to be an husbandman, and he planted a vineyard:
Gen 9:21 And he drank of the wine, and was drunken; and he was uncovered within his tent.
Gen 9:22 And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brethren without.
If Ham was responsible for the uncovering, why mention Ham as the father of Canaan when Ham had three other sons as we will soon see? And the scripture says "Ham saw" the nakedness, not that he uncovered the nakedness.
Gen 9:23 And Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it upon both their shoulders, and went backward, and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were backward, and they saw not their father's nakedness.
The uncovering of Noah's nakedness was a disrespectful act forbidden by God, and clearly recognized as such by Ham's brothers, as well as Ham, who would not be so quick to report it to his brothers if he was responsible. We see the will of God to support this:
Lev 18:6 None of you shall approach to any that is near of kin to him, to uncover their nakedness: I am the LORD.
Continuing with the next verse, and highlighting the original Hebrew word Strong's numbers for the purpose of original Hebrew meanings:
Gen 9:24 And NoahH5146 awokeH3364 from his wine,H4480 H3196 and knewH3045 (H853) whatH834 his youngerH6996 sonH1121 had doneH6213 unto him.
The Hebrew word for "younger" represented by H6996 can also mean youngest or smallest or least. We see an example of this in the following verse:
1Sa 9:21 And SaulH7586 answeredH6030 and said,H559 Am notH3808 IH595 a Benjamite,H1145 of the smallestH4480 H6996 of the tribesH7626 of Israel?H3478 and my familyH4940 the leastH6810 of allH4480 H3605 the familiesH4940 of the tribeH7626 of Benjamin?H1144 whereforeH4100 then speakestH1696 thou soH1697 H2088 toH413 me?
Now let us see who was cursed for the uncovering of Noah's nakedness:
Gen 9:25 And he said, Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren.
Remember?
Gen 9:22 And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brethren without.
So is in Gen 9:24, is Noah speaking of what his youngest son had done unto him or what Ham's youngest son had done unto Him? Based on the following verses, I would think it fair to assume the sons are listed in order of birth, or chronological order. Noah's sons:
Gen 5:32 And Noah was five hundred years old: and Noah begat Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
Gen 6:10 And Noah begat three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
1Ch 1:4 Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
Never is Ham mentioned as the youngest. What about Canaan, the receiver of the curse?
Gen 10:6 And the sons of Ham; Cush, and Mizraim, and Phut, and Canaan.
1Ch 1:8 The sons of Ham; Cush, and Mizraim, Put, and Canaan.
Here we see Canaan as the youngest son of Ham. And assuming that Ham did do the uncovering, then is Canaan cursed for his father's sin. Is this the will of God?
Eze 18:20 The soul that sins, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.
Therefore, according to the word of God, it must be Canaan who uncovered Noah's nakedness.
However, Ham is left out of the following blessings from Noah:
Gen 9:26 And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant.
Gen 9:27 God shall enlarge Japheth, and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant.
Why was Ham left out of the blessings? Time to return to the topic of this teaching, Babylon; confusion. Let us now follow the genealogy of Ham up to a man called Nimrod:
Gen 10:6 And the sons of Ham; Cush, and Mizraim, and Phut, and Canaan.
Gen 10:7 And the sons of Cush; Seba, and Havilah, and Sabtah, and Raamah, and Sabtecha: and the sons of Raamah; Sheba, and Dedan.
Gen 10:8 And Cush begat Nimrod: he began to be a mighty one in the earth.
We will again look at original Hebrew meanings using the Strong's reference:
Gen 10:9 HeH1931 wasH1961 a mightyH1368 hunterH6718 beforeH6440 the LORD:H3068 whereforeH5921 H3651 it is said,H559 Even as NimrodH5248 the mightyH1368 hunterH6718 beforeH6440 the LORD.H3068
What is interesting to note is that the Hebrew description for the word translated as "before" (H6440) begins with "the face" used in a great variety of applications. And one of those applications is "impudent in the face of someone" as we see in the following example:
Pro 7:13 So she caughtH2388 him, and kissedH5401 him, and with an impudentH5810 faceH6440 saidH559 unto him,
Here again is H6440 related to impudent:
Eze 2:4 For they are impudentH7186 H6440 childrenH1121 and stiffhearted.H2389 H3820 IH589 do sendH7971 you untoH413 them; and you shall sayH559 untoH413 them, ThusH3541 saysH559 the LordH136 GOD.H3069
Merriam-Webster defines impudent this way:
marked by contemptuous or cocky boldness or disregard of others : insolent
And seeing as Eze 2:4 clearly describes a people as impudent in the face of God, I believe it would be fair to assume that Nimrod was also impudent in the face of God, with idolatry, based on the remainder of this teaching as well as the fact that there is no mention of any good work or offering unto the Lord by Nimrod.
Continuing with Nimrod:
Gen 10:10 And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel [Babylon; confusion], and Erech, and Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar.
So, we have Nimrod, "a mighty hunter", which implies the use of a bow. We have "his kingdom" which implies a crown. And we have the first name of his kingdom as Babylon which means confusion, which spread with the dispersing of the people in Genesis 11 and has continued right up to our present time thwarting the worship of the one true God (2Ch 15:3; Jer 10;10; Mat 22:16; Joh 17:3; 1Th 1:9; 1Jn 5:20,21; Rev 19:9).
Notice the following, from the book of Revelation (revealing) as the Lamb, Jesus Christ unseals the seven seals and reveals mankind's ongoing history leading to the return of Jesus Christ:
Rev 6:1 And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see.
Rev 6:2 And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer.
And the bible is full of examples of kings worshipping false gods, and in some cases forcing the same on the people as in the book of Daniel.
So it would appear that the unsealing and revealing of the first seal shows that he who sits on that particular white horse in Rev 6:2 represents the historical and present day false worship system of Babylon. Again, including Christianity. Notice, from our Lord Jesus Christ:
Mat 24:4 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.
Mat 24:5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ [or of Christ]; and shall deceive many.
Continue reading the chapter to see how Jesus' teachings line up with the rest of the seals in the book of Revelation beginning in chapter 6.
And in case you thought the rider of this first white horse in Rev 6:2 represented Jesus Christ:
Rev 19:11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True [not the counterfeit of Rev 6:2], and in righteousness he does judge and make war.
Rev 19:12 His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself.
Rev 19:13 And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God [in truth; Joh 17:17].
Rev 19:14 And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.
Rev 19:15 And out of his mouth goes a sharp sword [no mention of a bow here], that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.
Rev 19:16 And he has on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.
Continuing in Genesis 10, after the description of Nimrod and his ties to Babylon, there are the genealogies of Noah's sons up to this verse:
Gen 10:32 These are the families of the sons of Noah, after their generations, in their nations: and by these were the nations divided in the earth after the flood.
Genesis 11 contains the story of the tower of Babel (early name for Babylon), which you can read if you like. Our focus will be on the "Babylon system" of religious confusion which spread with the dispersed people of Genesis 11.
We will now set our sights on Egypt:
Isa 19:1 The burden of Egypt. Behold, the LORD rides upon a swift cloud, and shall come into Egypt: and the idols of Egypt shall be moved at His presence, and the heart of Egypt shall melt in the midst of it.
So we see the clear mention of idols here. Now we come to the reason of focusing on Ham's genealogy, which is to see its connection to Babylon through Nimrod, the son of Cush, the son of Ham.
Notice from whence the land of Egypt derived:
Psa 78:51 And smote all the firstborn in Egypt; the chief of their strength in the tabernacles of Ham:
Psa 105:23 Israel also came into Egypt; and Jacob sojourned in the land of Ham.
Psa 105:24 And He increased His people greatly; and made them stronger than their enemies.
Psa 105:25 He turned their [Egypt's] heart to hate His people, to deal subtly with His servants.
Psa 105:26 He sent Moses His servant; and Aaron whom He had chosen.
Psa 105:27 They shewed His signs among them, and wonders in the land of Ham.
Let us now have a glimpse of God's distaste for idolatry:
Lev 19:4 Turn you not unto idols, nor make to yourselves molten gods: I am the LORD your God.
Lev 26:1 You shall make you no idols nor graven image, neither rear you up a standing image, neither shall you set up any image of stone in your land, to bow down unto it: for I am the LORD your God.
Now, regarding confusion as a result of idol worship:
Psa 97:7 Confounded be all they that serve graven images, that boast themselves of idols: worship Him, all you gods.
Isa 45:16 They shall be ashamed, and also confounded, all of them: they shall go to confusion together that are makers of idols.
Here is a good lesson for any who pray to God using idols:
Eze 14:1 Then came certain of the elders of Israel unto me, and sat before me.
Elders can be seen as men of religious authority in whom many trust aside from the word of God [Psa 118:8]. Many years spent with a religious title does not guarantee years spent in the truth of God (Mat 7:21). Notice:
Eze 14:2 And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
Eze 14:3 Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their heart, and put the stumbling block of their iniquity before their face: should I be enquired of at all by them?
Do we call on God using idols and expect Him to give ear to our inquires?
Eze 14:6 Therefore say unto the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord GOD; Repent, and turn yourselves from your idols; and turn away your faces from all your abominations.
Isa 48:1 Hear you this, O house of Jacob, which are called by the name of Israel, and are come forth out of the waters of Judah, which swear by the name of the LORD, and make mention of the God of Israel, but not in truth, nor in righteousness.
Now we come to the king (Lucifer now called Satan), behind the scenes, of this Babylon system of false worship designed to worship him and his demons and not the LORD who made the heavens (Psa 96:5). Here is a prophecy of the coming end of the confusion of Babylon:
Isa 14:3 And it shall come to pass in the day that the LORD shall give you rest [Heb 4:9] from your sorrow, and from your fear, and from the hard bondage wherein you were made to serve,
Isa 14:4 That you shall take up this proverb against the king of Babylon, and say, How has the oppressor ceased! the golden city ceased!
Here is the sum of the impact that this false system of worship has had on the nations who could otherwise be worshipping the one true God in truth, harmony, and peace:
Isa 14:12 How are you fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how are you cut down to the ground, which did weaken the nations!
And another prophesy of the false system's demise:
Isa 21:6 For thus has the Lord said unto me, Go, set a watchman, let him declare what he sees.
Isa 21:9 And, behold, here comes a chariot of men, with a couple of horsemen. And he answered and said, Babylon is fallen, is fallen; and all the graven images of her gods He has broken unto the ground.
Think Isa 21:9 to be of history only?
Rev 14:8 And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.
Rev 16:19 And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath.
Rev_17:5 And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.
Rev_18:2 And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.
Rev_18:10 Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is your judgment come.
Rev_18:21 And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all.
More from the book of Jeremiah:
Jer 50:23 How is the hammer of the whole earth cut asunder and broken! how is Babylon become a desolation among the nations!
Jer 50:24 I have laid a snare for you, and you are also taken, O Babylon, and you were not aware: you are found, and also caught, because you have striven against the LORD.
Jer 50:31 Behold, I am against you, O you most proud, says the Lord GOD of hosts: for your day is come, the time that I will visit you.
Jer 50:32 And the most proud shall stumble and fall, and none shall raise him up: and I will kindle a fire in his cities, and it shall devour all round about him.
Jer 50:46 At the noise of the taking of Babylon the earth is moved, and the cry is heard among the nations.
Jer 51:6 Flee out of the midst of Babylon, and deliver every man his soul: be not cut off in her iniquity; for this is the time of the LORD'S vengeance; he will render unto her a recompence.
Jer 51:7 Babylon has been a golden cup in the LORD'S hand, that made all the earth drunken: the nations have drunken of her wine; therefore the nations are mad.
Jer 51:8 Babylon is suddenly fallen and destroyed: howl for her; take balm for her pain, if so be she may be healed.
Jer 51:13 O you that dwell upon many waters, abundant in treasures, your end is come, and the measure of your covetousness.
Jer 51:17 Every man is brutish by his knowledge; every founder is confounded by the graven image: for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath in them.
Jer 51:45 My people, go you out of the midst of her, and deliver you every man his soul from the fierce anger of the LORD.
Jer 51:46 And lest your heart faint, and you fear for the rumour that shall be heard in the land; a rumour shall both come one year, and after that in another year shall come a rumour, and violence in the land, ruler against ruler.
Jer 51:60 So Jeremiah wrote in a book all the evil that should come upon Babylon, even all these words that are written against Babylon.
Here is a message from God. Though referring to the captivity of Israel at physical Babylon, it speaks to all who are deceived and held captive by the false worship system of Babylon:
Jer 29:8 For thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Let not your prophets and your diviners, that be in the midst of you, deceive you, neither hearken to your dreams which you cause to be dreamed.
Jer 29:9 For they prophesy falsely unto you in my name: I have not sent them, says the LORD.
Jer 29:10 For thus says the LORD, That after seventy years be accomplished at Babylon I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place.
Jer 29:11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.
Jer 29:12 Then shall you call upon me, and you shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you.
Jer 29:13 And you shall seek me, and find me, when you shall search for me with all your heart.
Jer 29:14 And I will be found of you, says the LORD: and I will turn away your captivity, and I will gather you from all the nations, and from all the places where I have driven you, says the LORD; and I will bring you again into the place whence I caused you to be carried away captive.
Read Jeremiah 50 and 51 for more insight on both the physical and spiritual aspects of Babylon.
Let us conclude with some warnings about idolatry from fellow servants of God. The apostle Paul:
2Co 6:16 And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? for you are the temple of the living God; as God has said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
1Th 1:9 For they themselves show of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God;
1Co 10:14 Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.
And the apostle John:
1Jn 5:21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.
Amen.
Freely I have received, freely I have given.
Farewell,
