Divided Churches
Greetings, a servant of God, by the grace of God, teaching the truth of God under the authority of Jesus Christ to any who are willing to receive it. (Mat 13:43).
The Holy Bible contains the truth of God by the word of God (Joh 17:17); therefore, God teaches and gives understanding, wisdom, and knowledge to all who pray and seek Him with all the heart (Deu 4:29-31; Jer 29:12,13; Psa 119:2).
Divided churches are not a small matter; they strike at the very unity Christ prayed for and the witness His people are meant to bear. Across the landscape of the faith, many assemblies bearing the name “Church of God” now stand apart from one another, each claiming to be the true remnant while discouraging fellowship with baptized believers in other congregations. Yet Scripture confronts this spirit of separation with a single piercing question: “Is Christ divided?” (1Co 1:13).
The spiritual church Jesus built is one body, joined by one Spirit, called by one hope, and united under one Lord (Eph 4:3-6). When believers judge one another, elevate human leaders, or refuse fellowship with those whom God has called, they do not defend truth - they fracture the body Christ came to unify.
This teaching is written not to condemn any group, but to uphold the doctrine of God (Joh 7:16), to warn against the peril of division, and to call all baptized followers of Christ back to the unity of the Spirit and the love commanded by the Lord.
Divisions grieve the heart of God (Pro 6:16-19), for He has called His people to walk in unity (Psa 133:1), to be of one mind (Rom 12:16; 15:6; 1Pe 3:8), and to bear with one another in love (Eph 4:2,15). Scripture urges believing followers to pursue peace, to guard the bond of fellowship, and to resist the pride that leads us to judge quickly or condemn those whom God is still shaping.
The body of Christ was never meant to be fractured into separate groups by personal opinions, rivalries, or the elevation of human teachers, but to stand together in the truth with humility and patience. When we forget this, we weaken our witness and obscure the very gospel we claim to uphold. True unity is not uniformity - it is the shared commitment to honour God's will above our own and to treat one another with the grace He has shown us.
The Spiritual Church
Jesus confirmed the existence of a spiritual church after Peter’s recognition of Him as the Son of God - a church composed of believing followers who worship God in spirit and in truth. This church is not defined by buildings, organizations, or human administrations, but by divine revelation and obedience to the doctrine of God.
Mat 16:18 And I say also unto you, That you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
The Greek word for “build” means to build up, establish, or edify. The “rock” is not Peter himself, but the spiritual truth he confessed - that Jesus is the Son of the living God. Christ’s “church” (ekklesia) is a called‑out assembly of believing followers, a spiritual community established and sustained by the truth revealed from the Father.
Jesus did not construct a temple or establish a physical headquarters. He inaugurated a new covenant community, founded on the truth of His identity and the obedience of His followers. The phrase “the gates of hell (Hades; grave) shall not prevail” emphasizes spiritual warfare and eternal victory - not architectural strength or institutional permanence (Heb 2:14,15; Rev 1:17,18; Joh 11:25,26; 1Jn 3:8; 1Co 15:54; 2Ti 1:10).
The church Jesus established is confirmed by obedience to His doctrine, which is the doctrine of God (Joh 7:16), and not by mortar, stone, or denominational labels. It is a spiritual house built of living stones, united by one Spirit, and held together by the truth of God - not divided by the names or claims of men.
The Spiritual House of Living Stones
Peter expands on Jesus’ teaching by showing that the true church is not a physical institution but a spiritual house made of living stones - individual believing followers joined together by the Spirit of God. This understanding directly opposes the idea that Christ’s church is divided into competing organizations. Instead, every baptized follower becomes part of one spiritual structure built by Christ Himself.
1Pe 2:5 You also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
This spiritual house is not divided by human labels or separated by organizational boundaries. It is united by the truth of God and the indwelling Spirit. Every believing follower who worships the Father in spirit and in truth (Joh 4:23) is part of this house, regardless of where they sit on any given Sabbath.
The Doctrine of God
Joh 7:16 Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.
The spiritual church is defined by obedience to this doctrine - the doctrine of God - and not by affiliation with any physical church that bears Christ’s name. When those who truly seek to follow Christ recognize this, divisions lose their power, and the true unity of Christ’s body becomes visible.
Worship in Spirit and in Truth
If Christ’s church is spiritual - built of living stones and united by one Spirit - then its worship must also be spiritual. Jesus Himself defined the kind of worship the Father seeks, and His words cut through every human division, every organizational boundary, and every claim of exclusivity.
Joh 4:23 But the hour comes, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeks such to worship him.
Joh 4:24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
Jesus does not say the Father seeks worshippers in a particular building, under a particular administration, or within a particular organization. He seeks those who worship in spirit - with sincerity, humility, and the indwelling of God’s Spirit - and in truth - according to the doctrine of God. When believing followers worship in spirit and in truth, divisions lose their power. No human group can claim exclusive ownership of God’s people, because the Father Himself determines who belongs to Him - those who worship according to His truth. Jesus prayed that His followers would be sanctified by this truth:
Joh 17:17 Sanctify them through your truth: your word is truth.
This sanctification is what separates believing followers from the religious confusion of the world (Jer 3:25; 1Co 14:33) - not the name of a church, not the building they attend, and not the claims of men. It is the truth of God that sets His people apart, and it is the Spirit of God that unites them.
Thus, the spiritual church Jesus built is defined by worship in spirit, worship in truth, obedience to the doctrine of God, unity in the Spirit, and love toward all baptized followers of the doctrine of God. Any teaching that divides baptized followers of Christ, or discourages fellowship among those who worship the Father in spirit and in truth, stands contrary to the very worship Jesus described.
Religious Confusion
Jesus prayed that His followers would be sanctified by the truth of God so they would not be swept into the religious confusion that surrounds the world. This confusion arises when human doctrines, traditions, and organizational claims overshadow the doctrine of God. It is in this context that Paul issued a warning often misused today.
Rom 16:17 Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which you have learned; and avoid them.
This verse is frequently applied in ways Paul never intended. It has been used to disfellowship baptized members who do not conform to non‑biblical doctrines or organizational policies. But Paul was writing to early believers who followed the doctrine of God the Father, taught by Jesus His Christ and passed directly to His disciples. His warning was aimed at those who introduced teachings contrary to Christ’s doctrine, not at those who simply worship in a different assembly or refuse to accept human traditions. Jesus made the source of true doctrine unmistakably clear:
Joh 7:16 Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.
Joh 7:17 If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.
Joh 7:18 He that speaks of himself seeks his own glory: but he that seeks his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.
The early followers understood this. They continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine, fellowship, breaking of bread, and prayers - all rooted in the teachings of Christ.
Act 2:42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.
Religious confusion arises when churches elevate their own traditions, statements of belief, or organizational authority above the doctrine of Christ. When this happens, divisions multiply, fellowship is restricted, and baptized believers are judged not by Scripture but by human standards. This is the very opposite of what Paul intended in Romans 16:17. His warning was not a tool for separating believers from one another. It was a safeguard against teachings that contradict the doctrine of God - teachings that divide the body of Christ by replacing truth with the commandments of men (Mat 15:9).
Only One True Church - Is Christ Divided?
Today, many self‑proclaimed churches of God claim to be the one true church of God. Yet if the doctrine of God teaches unity, then all who follow Christ should be one, fulfilling the will of God together. Paul confronted this issue directly with a question that exposes the error behind every exclusivist claim: “Is Christ divided?” (1Co 1:13). Christ is not divided, and therefore His body cannot be divided into competing organizations that refuse fellowship with one another.
The unity of Christ’s body is spiritual and must be spiritually discerned (1Co 2:14). Paul explains that the body is one, though it has many members, and that all believing followers are joined into this one body by the Spirit of God.
1Co 12:12 For as the body is one, and has many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.
1Co 12:13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
This unity is not organizational but spiritual. It is rooted in the Spirit, not in the name of a church or the authority of a human leader. Paul reinforces this truth in Ephesians, where he describes the foundation of the church’s unity:
Eph 4:3 Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
Eph 4:4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as you are called in one hope of your calling;
Eph 4:5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism,
Eph 4:6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.
Jesus Himself prayed that His followers would be one - not divided into separate groups, not separated by human doctrines, but united in the same spiritual fellowship He shares with the Father.
Joh 17:21 That they all may be one; as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that you have sent me.
The spiritual church Jesus established (Mat 16:18) is defined by obedience to God’s doctrine through His teachings, not by affiliation with a particular organization. Many come in His name (Mat 24:5), but only those who abide in His doctrine belong to the true spiritual body. Paul warns that some serve not the Lord Jesus Christ, but their own desires, using persuasive words to deceive the hearts of the simple.
Rom 16:18 For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.
Thus, the true church is not identified by a sign on a building or by claims of exclusivity. It is identified by unity in the Spirit, obedience to the doctrine of Christ, and love toward all baptized believers whom God has called. Any teaching that divides the body of Christ or discourages fellowship among His followers stands contrary to the very unity Christ prayed for and the doctrine He taught.
Test Doctrine - Identifying Division by Its Source
Scripture warns that division does not arise from the doctrine of Christ but from teachings that oppose it. Paul’s admonition to “mark them which cause divisions” was never intended as a tool for separating baptized believers from one another. It was a command to identify teachings that contradict the doctrine of God and threaten the unity of Christ’s body.
Division is not a fruit of the Spirit; it is a doctrine of demons designed to attack the unity of the body of Christ. Those who promote teachings contrary to the doctrine of Christ reveal themselves by the effect of their doctrine. When their teachings divide baptized believers, restrict fellowship, or elevate human authority above the words of Christ, they manifest the spirit of error rather than the Spirit of truth (1Jn 4:6).
Partakers of doctrinal error are made evident by teaching doctrines contrary to the doctrine of Jesus the Christ which is of God the Holy Father (Joh 7:16-18). This is the spirit of anti-Christ (1Jn 2:18). The doctrines will often appear opposite to what Christ teaches.
John warned the brethren to test every spirit, because many false prophets had gone out into the world. The test is simple: does the teaching abide in the doctrine of Christ? If it does not, it is not of God.
1Jn 4:1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
2Jn 1:9 Whosoever transgresses, and abides not in the doctrine of Christ, has not God. He that abides in the doctrine of Christ, he has both the Father and the Son.
The people John addressed were baptized believing followers who kept the commandments of God and held the testimony of Jesus His Christ. They were not divided by organizations or separated by human authority; they were united by obedience to the doctrine of Christ.
Division arises when doctrines are introduced that contradict Christ’s teachings, elevate human authority, or restrict fellowship among baptized believers. Such doctrines are influenced by the adversary, who seeks to weaken the unity of Christ’s body and rob believers of their crown of righteousness (Pro 16:31; 2Ti 4:8).
Paul warned that the god of this world blinds the minds of those who do not receive the truth of God (2Co 4:4). This blindness leads to doctrines that appear religious but oppose the teachings of Christ. Truth seekers must therefore test every doctrine by Scripture, holding fast to what is good and rejecting what is contrary to the truth (1Th 5:21).
Spiritual Adversary - The Source of Division
Scripture clearly reveals that a spiritual adversary works tirelessly to undermine the unity of the body of Christ. Division among baptized believers is never the fruit of the Spirit; it is the result of spiritual influence that opposes the doctrine of God. The adversary seeks to weaken fellowship, disrupt unity, and sow division and confusion among those who seek to faithfully follow Christ. Peter warns believers to remain vigilant because the adversary actively seeks to devour those who walk in truth.
1Pe 5:8-10
“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walks about, seeking whom he may devour: whom resist steadfast in the faith…”
Paul also teaches that believers must put on the whole armour of God to stand against the schemes of the adversary, for the battle is spiritual, not physical.
Eph 6:10-13
“Put on the whole armour of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.”
Jesus Himself warned Peter that Satan desired to sift him as wheat, showing that the adversary targets those who belong to Christ.
Luk 22:31 And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat:
The body of Christ is composed of those who faithfully follow God’s doctrine through Jesus His Christ (Rev 17:14). Because they belong to Christ, they are the target of spiritual attack. The adversary works through deception, pride, and false doctrine to create division among believers. His influence is seen in the increasing disobedience and confusion in the world (Eph 2:2). Isaiah describes the fall of Lucifer, now called Satan, whose rebellion weakened the nations.
Isa 14:12 How are you fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how are you cut down to the ground, which did weaken the nations!
Revelation reveals that Satan deceives the whole world and operates with great wrath because he knows his time is short.
Rev 12:9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceives the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
Rev 12:12 Therefore rejoice, you heavens, and you that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knows that he has but a short time.
Increasing Sorrows
Paul warns that the love of money and worldly desires lead many away from the faith, piercing themselves with many sorrows.
1Ti 6:10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
Daniel prophesies that the wicked will continue in wickedness, but the wise will understand the truth.
Dan 12:10 Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried; but the wicked shall do wickedly: and none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand.
Division among believers is one of the adversary’s most effective tools. When churches teach separation from baptized followers of Christ, or elevate human authority above the doctrine of God, they unknowingly cooperate with the spirit of division. Or, in some cases, hold the truth in unrighteousness rather than in the Spirit of unity. Read Rom 1:18; 2:8; 2Th 2:10-12. Believers must therefore resist the adversary by holding fast to the truth, walking in the Spirit, and guarding the unity Christ prayed for.
The New Commandment - Love one Another
Based on the truth of God, and from years of direct experience with several divided churches of God - three of which openly teach that they alone are the one true church and instruct their members not to fellowship with baptized believers in other congregations - it becomes clear that a very real danger exists among the called. That danger is the breaking of the new commandment given by the Lord Jesus Christ.
Joh 13:34 A new commandment I give unto you, That you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.
Shunning a fellow baptized member of Christ’s spiritual church (Mat 16:18; Joh 6:44; 1Pe 2:5) simply because he worships in another assembly - though there is not another true assembly apart from Christ’s spiritual church - and who has done nothing to personally offend anyone, does not reflect the love God commands. Such behaviour elevates human authority above the clear commandment of God. Peter and the apostles understood this principle:
Act 5:29 Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.
The psalmist affirms the same truth:
Psa 118:8 It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man.
Paul also warns believing followers not to use their liberty as an excuse for division or self‑interest, but to serve one another in love.
Gal 5:13 For, brethren, you have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.
He further cautions against being tossed about by human doctrines, cunning craftiness, and deceptive teachings that divide the body.
Eph 4:14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
Eph 4:15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:
Teaching division and avoidance does not facilitate loving and serving one another. Paul makes this plain:
Gal 5:14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; You shall love your neighbour as yourself.
Gal 5:15 But if you bite and devour one another, take heed that you be not consumed one of another.
Biting and devouring one another is the way of this present evil world (Gal 1:4), a world filled with the spirit of conflict and disobedience (Eph 2:2). Believers are called to come out of that spirit (Rev 18:4) and walk in the Spirit of God.
Gal 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
Gal 5:25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
Rom 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
Jesus Himself resisted the adversary with the truth of God:
Mat 4:10 Then says Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, you shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only shall you serve.
Believers must take care not to give in to a spirit of judgment or superiority over others, assuming themselves worthy of the kingdom of God while despising fellow baptized followers of Christ. Jesus teaches that the kingdom belongs to the poor in spirit, the meek, the merciful, and the pure in heart. These qualities cannot coexist with division, shunning, or spiritual pride.
Mat 5:3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Mat 5:5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
Mat 5:7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
Mat 5:8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
Persecuted for the Truth
Those who suffer persecution for standing up for truth are blessed. They do not fear men. They obey God and eagerly desire to be in His presence:
Mat 5:10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Mat 5:11 Blessed are you, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.
Mat 5:12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.
Some have been cast out of physical buildings for holding to the truth, but Jesus teaches that He will never cast out those whom the Father gives Him.
Joh 6:37 All that the Father gives me shall come to me; and him that comes to me I will in no wise cast out.
This is the doctrine of God. It is not wise to obey any command that instructs believers to avoid those whom Christ Himself will not reject. Such commands violate the new commandment to love one another. Jesus also warns that some will be hated, separated, and reproached for His sake.
Luk 6:22 Blessed are you, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake.
Be Not Discouraged
Believers must not be discouraged. The spiritual assembly that worships God in spirit and in truth is not defined by buildings or human authority. It is defined by obedience to God’s word and the love Christ commands.
Mat 5:19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Some teach love of brethren within their own organization while instructing members to avoid baptized believers in other churches of God. This contradiction raises a clear red flag. They may even misuse Scripture to justify separation, such as:
1Jn 2:19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.
But John is speaking of those who deny the faith of Jesus, not those who seek to live by every word of God:
1Jn 2:23 Whosoever denies the Son, the same has not the Father: (but) he that acknowledges the Son has the Father also.
True believing followers hear Christ’s voice and keep His words.
Joh 10:27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
Joh 14:23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.
Joh 14:24 He that loves me not keeps not my sayings: and the word which you hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me.
The new commandment is central to the unity of Christ’s body. Any doctrine that divides baptized believers, restricts fellowship, or elevates human authority above Christ’s command to love one another stands contrary to the doctrine of God.
Righteousness of the Truth
Jesus teaches that righteousness is not measured by outward affiliation, human authority, or organizational loyalty. True righteousness is defined by obedience to the truth of God. This is why He warns that unless our righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, we will not enter the kingdom of heaven.
Mat 5:20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.
The scribes and Pharisees were outwardly religious, yet their righteousness was lacking because they elevated human tradition above the commandments of God. Jesus exposes their error:
Mat 23:15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you compass sea and land to make one proselyte ,and when he is made, you make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.
Today, the same danger appears when churches focus on gaining “prospective members” who will comply with creeds, traditions, or statements of belief that differ from the doctrine of Christ. When human tradition replaces the truth of God, righteousness is lost, and division is born. Believing followers must be armed with the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God - the truth of God.
Eph 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
Joh 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
If our faith is truly in the word of God, then we must “prove all things” by Scripture, holding fast to what is good and rejecting what contradicts the doctrine of Christ.
1Th 5:21 Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.
Righteousness is revealed in those who submit to the truth of God rather than the traditions of men. It is seen in believing followers who walk in humility, obey Christ’s teachings, and refuse to judge or divide the body of Christ based on human authority. True righteousness is not found in claiming to be the one true church, but in living by every word of God and loving all baptized followers whom God has called.
The righteousness Christ requires dissolves pride, exposes false doctrine, and unites believers in the truth. It is the righteousness of the spiritual church - the church built by Christ, not by men - and it is the righteousness that preserves unity in His body.
A United Body of Believing Followers
Jesus taught His disciples to pray with a united voice, using the word “us” to signify a single body approaching the Father together. This unity is not confined to a building or an organization; it reflects the spiritual fellowship of all who belong to Christ.
Mat 6:11 Give us this day our daily bread.
Mat 6:13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
The Father is preparing a single, united spiritual bride for His Son - a people who worship God in spirit and in truth, who walk in love, and who obey the doctrine of Christ. This bride is not defined by denominational boundaries or human authority. It is the spiritual church “the Lord pitched, and not man.”
Heb 8:1 Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens;
Heb 8:2 A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man.
Believers must resist the spirit behind adversity and broaden their prayers toward all brethren in the world who suffer the same afflictions and trials. Peter reminds us that the adversary attacks all who belong to Christ, not just those in one particular assembly.
1Pe 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walks about, seeking whom he may devour:
1Pe 5:9 Whom resist steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.
Paul affirms that all followers who have faith in Christ Jesus are children of God, united in one spiritual family.
Gal 3:26 For you are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
John teaches that love for the children of God is revealed in obedience to God’s commandments. This love extends to all baptized followers, not only those within a particular organization.
1Jn 5:2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.
Paul further exhorts believers to be like‑minded, united, and welcoming toward one another, just as Christ has received us.
Rom 15:5 Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus:
Rom 15:6 That you may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Rom 15:7 Wherefore receive you one another, as Christ also received us to the glory of God.
Unity in Christ is not organizational uniformity. It is the shared obedience to the doctrine of God, the shared love commanded by Christ, and the shared fellowship of the Spirit. When believing followers recognize that Christ’s body is one, they can no longer justify division, shunning, or separation based on human authority. Instead, they embrace the truth that all baptized followers of Christ - wherever they gather - are part of the same spiritual house, the same spiritual family, and the same spiritual body.
False Worship Doctrines - Guarding Against Error
False worship doctrines arise when teachings depart from the doctrine of God and replace His truth with human tradition, organizational authority, or the commandments of men. Jesus warned that such doctrines make worship vain, even when practiced with religious zeal.
Mat 15:9 But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
When churches elevate their own statements of belief, traditions, or administrative policies above the teachings of Christ, they lead believers into vain worship. This happens when human authority is treated as equal to - or greater than - the doctrine of God. Jesus rebuked the religious leaders of His day for this very error, because it nullified the word of God.
Mar 7:13 Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which you have delivered: and many such like things do you.
False worship doctrines often manifest in teachings that divide baptized believers, restrict fellowship, or claim exclusive ownership of God’s people. These doctrines contradict the unity Christ prayed for and oppose the spiritual nature of His church. They also create confusion by presenting human requirements as divine commandments. Paul warned believers to beware of teachings that appear religious but are rooted in human philosophy rather than the doctrine of Christ.
Col 2:8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
False worship doctrines often arise when churches claim to be the one true church and insist that salvation or fellowship is found only within their organization. Yet Scripture teaches that Christ’s body is spiritual, unified by the Spirit, and composed of all who obey the doctrine of God. No physical organization can claim exclusive ownership of the people God calls. Jesus warns that many will come in His name, claiming authority, yet their teachings will mislead many.
Mat 24:5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.
The danger is not merely deception but division - separating baptized believers whom Christ has received. When doctrines encourage believers to avoid or shun those who worship God in spirit and in truth, they oppose the new commandment to love one another and violate the unity Christ established.
True worship is grounded in the doctrine of God, revealed through Jesus His Christ and confirmed by the apostles. It is expressed in obedience, humility, and love toward all baptized followers of the Christ. Any doctrine that divides the body, restricts fellowship, or elevates human authority above the teachings of Christ is a false worship doctrine, no matter how religious it appears.
The Doctrine of Christ - The Foundation of Unity
The doctrine of Christ is the foundation of the spiritual church He established. It is the doctrine of God the Father, delivered through His Son, confirmed by the apostles, and preserved in Scripture. Every true believing follower is united by this doctrine, and every division among baptized followers arises when teachings depart from it.
2Jn 1:9 Whosoever transgresses, and abides not in the doctrine of Christ, has not God. He that abides in the doctrine of Christ, he has both the Father and the Son.
2Jn 1:10 If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:
2Jn 1:11 For he that bids him God speed is partaker of his evil [hurtful] deeds.
This warning is not directed at called, baptized followers who worship God in spirit and in truth.; it is directed at those who introduce teachings that contradict Christ’s doctrine, divide His body, or elevate human authority above the word of God. Paul teaches that Christ is the head of the church, and that the entire body grows together when it is joined to Him.
Eph 4:15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:
Eph 4:16 From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplies, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, makes increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.
The doctrine of Christ produces unity, love, humility, and obedience. It does not produce division, shunning, or exclusivity. When churches claim to be the one true church, or instruct members to avoid baptized believers in other congregations, they depart from the doctrine of Christ and follow the traditions of men.
True unity is found only in the doctrine of Christ - the doctrine of God - and all who abide in it are part of the same spiritual body, regardless of where they gather. This doctrine is the foundation of the spiritual church Jesus built, and it is the standard by which all teachings must be tested.
Conclusion - A Call to Unity in the Spiritual Church
The spiritual church Jesus established is not divided, fragmented, or separated by human authority. It is one body, built on the doctrine of God, united by the Spirit, and held together by the love Christ commands. Every baptized follower who worships the Father in spirit and in truth is part of this spiritual house, regardless of where they gather.
Division arises only when doctrines depart from the teachings of Christ and elevate human authority above the word of God. When churches claim to be the one true church, restrict fellowship among baptized believers, or teach separation based on organizational loyalty, they oppose the unity Christ established and violate the new commandment to love one another.
True worship is grounded in the doctrine of God. True righteousness is revealed in obedience to Christ’s teachings. True unity is found in the Spirit, not in human institutions. The spiritual church is composed of living stones, built up into a spiritual house, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus His Christ.
Believing followers must therefore test every doctrine, reject teachings that divide the body, and hold fast to the truth Christ delivered. The adversary seeks to weaken the unity of Christ’s body through deception, pride, and false doctrine, but those who walk in the Spirit resist his influence and remain steadfast in the faith.
The Father is preparing a united spiritual bride for His Son - a people purified by truth, strengthened by love, and joined together by the Spirit. This bride is not defined by buildings, denominations, or human authority. It is defined by obedience to God’s word and the love Christ commands.
The call to unity is a call to return to the doctrine of Christ, to reject the traditions of men, and to embrace the spiritual fellowship of all who belong to Him. It is a call to love one another, serve one another, and walk in the Spirit. It is a call to recognize that Christ is not divided, and therefore, His church must not be divided.
Those who abide in the doctrine of Christ are part of His spiritual church, the church the Lord pitched and not man. They are united in truth, strengthened by love, and preserved by the Spirit. This is the church against which the gates of hell shall not prevail.

Freely, I have received from the word of God; freely, I have given to all who would receive the truth of God.
